A new and innovative children's home
1/3 of children in care have three or more placements each year. 11,000 leave care and move into independence aged 16, 17 or 18.
72% of children in children’s homes have a diagnosable mental health condition and 61 % are in alternative provision.
Care leavers are also 60 times more likely to be homeless, and 66 times more likely to be the parent of a child who ends up in care.
What we believe
We believe that children growing up in residential care can go on to live full and fulfilling lives if they have the right support. Our model draws on the most up to date research and methods in child development applied with a personal and caring approach.
We believe that education is fundamental to breaking the link between demography and destiny. We place a strong emphasis on education and we take a keen interest in our children’s educational progress. We employ people who understand how to best support children’s education, and provide a wide range of extracurricular opportunities to supplement classroom teaching.
Each Lighthouse home will offer placements for up to 8 children at any one time. Children placed at the homes will be aged between 11 and 18; when they reach their 18th birthday, they will be offered the opportunity to take a placement in the Lighthouse semi-independent accommodation, which will be based within walking distance of the children’s home.
At the very heart of Lighthouse's approach are our people. We recruit and train talented graduates so that they can support some of the UK's most vulnerable young people. We are the first to offer two-year programme of training and development along with an excellent remuneration package to attract talented graduates to work in the sector.
Young people living at the Lighthouse will be able to retain close links with the children’s home as a young person would who had moved out of the family home; returning on a Sunday for dinner, visiting regularly, and maintaining relationships. The semi-independent accommodation will also provide a leaving care offer for children coming out of other residential care settings, and for those leaving foster care.
